Vitex aganus-castus ‘Shoal Creek’ (Shoal Creek Chaste Tree) makes an excellent replacement for the over-planted crepe myrtle. With beautiful blue blooms, this tree is a butterfly magnet! It tops out at 12-15 feet, but can be kept smaller, and requires full sun. Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Quickfire’ (Quickfire Small Leafed Hydrangea) is an awesome full sun hydrangea, a little more upright and less floppy than ‘Limelight.’ It makes an excellent replacement of Knockout Roses when they have succumbed to the incurable Rose Rosette. Check out its smaller sibling ‘Little Quickfire’ for tighter spaces. Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.
For moist but well-drained shade, nothing beats Hydrangea macrophylla ‘GENIKRE’ (Nikko Repeato Big Leafed Hydrangea) a fantastic repeat blooming hydrangea for shade, much better than the Original Endless Summer. Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.
Looking for an indestructible house plant? Try Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant a.k.a. Zanzibar Gem). Whether near a window or deep in the interior of your home or building, this is the plant for brown thumbs! Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.
For dry shade, nothing beats Heuchera. We have all the best varieties, like ‘Silver Scroll’, ‘Delta Dawn’, ‘Cherry Cola’, ‘Electric Lime’, and many more! Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.

Potting something up? Check out our “Drain-It Disk”, available in small, medium, and large sizes at our Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue and our original Palladio Garden Building, across the street from the Horticulture Building, at 741 S. Cox. It will last for years and keep the drainage hole in the bottom of your pot from becoming clogged over time. Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.
The best house plant food we’ve ever tried is Dr. Earth Pump & Grow Organic House Plant Food. For most plants, 2 squirts every 2 weeks does the trick! Available at Palladio Garden’s Horticulture Building at 2231 Central Avenue.

This Memorial Day Weekend at Palladio!

How can you get the most out of your greenspace?
Spring and Summer blooms can inspire us to get planting, but care should be taken to avoid unwise expenditures. John Jennings, Master Gardener and manager of the Palladio Garden Horticulture Center, has some words of advice to make your efforts, and dollars, go further in our mid-south climate zone.
Paying attention to climate zone ratings and knowing the local conditions within our region can help in determining what plants are best suited for thriving in Memphis. Perennial plants can fit into your garden plan as well, and they can be a great value year after year, coming back each spring.
John explains further in his May ‘Garden Variety’ feature in Memphis Magazine.
